Utility and incentive context
New Jersey BPU-regulated electric distribution companies and electricity suppliers offer net metering for eligible residential and commercial customer-generators using Class I renewable energy, provided system capacity does not exceed the customer-generator annual electric consumption. Utility and project eligibility should be checked before quoting savings.
- New Jersey solar incentives are primarily handled through the Successor Solar Incentive program, including ADI for residential, smaller net-metered, and community solar projects, and CSI for larger projects. Current SREC-II rules and incentive levels should be verified before quoting amounts.
- New Jersey has sales and use tax exemption rules for qualifying solar energy devices or systems. Documentation normally uses an Exempt Use Certificate such as Form ST-4, so customers and contractors should confirm the current Division of Taxation requirements before quoting tax savings.
- New Jersey offers a Renewable Energy System Property Tax Exemption for certified residential, commercial, or industrial renewable energy systems. The exemption is handled locally and is generally the difference between assessed value before and after installation, so the local tax assessor and Form CRES process should be checked.
