Utility and incentive context
New York uses several compensation structures for distributed solar. Many smaller on-site projects can use net metering, while larger, remote, and community solar projects may use the Value Stack/VDER approach. Utility territory and project type should be checked before quoting bill-credit value.
- NY-Sun provides solar incentives through participating contractors, and New York also offers state tax-credit and financing support where eligible. Incentive amount depends on project size, location, customer type, and current program block availability.
- New York publishes separate state guidance for residential and commercial solar energy system equipment sales tax treatment. Applicability can depend on project type and locality, so the contractor and tax advisor should verify the current treatment before quoting tax savings.
- New York Real Property Tax Law Section 487 can exempt the increase in assessed value from a solar energy system for 15 years, although local opt-out and PILOT details can matter. The local assessor or authority having jurisdiction should be checked.
