Utility and incentive context
North Carolina residential net metering changed after the Commission approved revised tariffs. Duke Energy customers now use revised options such as Residential Solar Choice or the Net Metering Bridge where available, with exported energy credited differently than under older Rider NM terms. Utility territory and rider eligibility should be checked before quoting savings.
- North Carolina incentive opportunities are utility-, federal-, local-, and program-specific. EnergizeNC/Solar for All is designed to support low-income and disadvantaged communities, while other incentives should be checked through DEQ, DSIRE, utilities, and current program guidance.
- North Carolina sales tax treatment for residential solar should be verified before quoting tax savings. Do not assume a broad statewide residential solar sales tax exemption without checking current Department of Revenue and project-specific guidance.
- North Carolina provides property tax exclusion treatment for solar energy electric systems. Current NCDOR forms reference N.C.G.S. 105-275(45), and DSIRE summarises residential systems as eligible for 100 percent of appraised value, with other systems commonly treated differently.
